Anyone who has participated in travel ball is familiar with the fact that most coaches require their players to arrive at the field one hour before game time in order for them to practice and loosen up. I’m certain many of you have asked, “What am I going to do for an entire hour before the game?” I know when we first started travel ball nine seasons ago I asked myself that very question and after countless days of boredom waiting for the game to start and nothing to do I realized I had to have a plan, or lose my mind. The following is a list of things I do now while waiting for the game to begin.
This season I recently started going on power walks. So many times while at home I don’t get the chance to go for a walk or exercise because of the daily demands of family life. Now that I go on these walks on game days I have found that it also has pushed me to exercise even on days we don’t have games.
I downloaded all of my favorite music on my iPhone so while I’m on my walks I can listen to my favorite songs. Not only do I get to enjoy the music but it’s a great motivator.
One of my favorite things to do while waiting for the game to start is catch up on some reading. I always bring a book or my E-reader which I downloaded all of my magazine subscriptions on. I really love the uninterrupted hour I get to enjoy reading, especially on those perfect warm Spring days.
That hour before the game starts is also a great opportunity to multitask. Not only am I spending time with my son, but while the team practices I take advantage of the time and answer emails, both work and personal.
Lastly, anyone whose family participates in organized sports knows just how limited your time is during the season. Meals can become tricky, that’s why I use this time to meal plan. I bring my organizer and plan out the weeks meals and grocery list. It’s a great time saver.
I hope these tips inspire you…what do you do while waiting for the game to begin?
